Dramatic Change in the Occupied Area Demographics

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Piratis » Fri Apr 13, 2007 1:42 am

You wanted the TCs out

I remind you that the ethnic cleansing was done by Turkey and not us and that in 1974 no TC was killed until after the invasion had started.

Pyrpolizer
Observer I have 3 questions:
1)Do you live there?
2)If you do then can you distinguish between a settler, a settler born there and a real TC?
3)If you can then what do you see around you?

1. Yes, I live in TRNC.
2. Yes, I believe that I can tell the difference between a 'settler' and a native-TC. It is more difficult to tell the background a youth born in TRNC, as a mixture of global culture (read MTV etc), local culture and Turkish culture intermingle. The child of a 'settler' who has never left Cyprus is likely to appear more Cypriot than the child of a genuine TC after 4 years university in Turkey for example. And both seem more Cypriot than a genuine TC child who has spent their formative years in England or Australia - and there are quite a few of those.
3. The numbers quoted by the GCs are, from my observation, greatly exaggerated. I don't know how the census was organised in detail, but the results will have included many temporary residents such as the large number of students and Turkish workers on temporary work visas who are comparable with students and Filipino, Sri Lankan temporary workers in the South. The days of Turkish nationals visiting Cyprus on their identity cards and just staying are long since over. In addition, Cyprus is a popular holiday destination for Turkish nationals so a number of tourists will have been picked up by the census.

Then there are all sorts of 'funnies'. For example, I know personally a retired senior Turkish businessman, in his 70s, who has retired to North Cyprus with his English wife. Is he a settler? Also an Austrian passport holder who is actually Turkish, and is married to a retired German. Is she a settler?

IMO this is something that the GCs (and everyone else) is going to have to live with anyway. Already the EU has made RoC change its laws to comply with the EU regulations that say that a foreigner who has been legally in the country for 5 years then has the right to permanent residency.

I know that the word 'legally' will be pounced on by GCs, but as they have agreed (Article 10) that their law does not operate in the North, the de facto legal authority has been the TRNC government. I think that a good lawyer could make a very reasonable case that people who settled here did so following the rules of the de facto government so should not be expelled.

Then there is also the practical realities. Should some agreement on unification be reached, can you really see the EU enjoying the sight on the world's TV screens of yet another ethnic clearing of people who have lived and raised their families in Cyprus. You just have to look around the rest of the EU to see how even illegal immigrants are handled ever so gently and frequently allowed to stay. Will the rest of Europe sit back and allow police (probably GC police) to force women and children on to boats to be sent back to a country that is lining up to be a EU member?

Now if it was up to the Greeks, they would just chuck them overboard in Turkish waters and quickly make a run for it and then pretend they never saw them!

Piratis stop trying to shift the blame, and enough already with your CUT/PASTE bollocks!

So what if Turkey came in 74, EVERY TC was happy to see them except you so does that mean we are ALL partitionists?

Something must have been making these people so desperately in need for help, maybe it was the horrible food?

Did you or did you not wipe out 2 villages full of children and women and buried them half dead into mass graves?

The intention was clearly there, so obviously all you needed was a good excuse, it was just a matter of time maybe!

What were you planning on doing with us if Turkey hadn't intervened?

Wait till we eat each other maybe?

Why did my parents and everyone else they knew had to wait for UN to feed them? etc. etc. etc.

Why were the TCs living in dreadful conditions and only allowed to move around under the GC control on their own island? I know for a fact that my grandpa was banned from leaving his own village and it almost cost him his life! And all because he had written a poem about Makarios!

You love to go on about ethnic cleansing and how it is only us who are refusing to recognize our illegalities, well lets hear you criticise your illegalities as well, its something i have NEVER heard you comment on!

And please don't bother answering any of them if you are simply going to repeat yourself, because i have actually started to skip your posts after reading the first lines when it all starts becoming so familiarly "Piratis", its almost like chewing on sand in the twilight zone, so surprise me please

When turkey invaded there were no TC's killed since the atrocities from both sides in 63. I and many other GC's on this forum have acknowledged the crimes committed in 63 and Piratis has also said that many times (hope you don't mind that i speak for you).

I don't expect you Shah to acknowledge firstly that there were deaths from both sides in 63, I also don't expect you to acknowledge that we were cleansed from our homes....I do however at the very least expect a millitary campaign with a force of 35,000+ with bombings, napalm, tanks and paratroopers leading to thousands of GC deaths, to be called an invasion and not an intervention.

Lets stop being ridiculous.

Shah, it was not happy and sweet as it would not be happy and sweet for any 18% minority around the word uprising against a majority of 82% trying to create a state within a state.

Lets not complicate things more than necessary shall we?

Thanks observer for your post re:settlers.

I also tend to beleive this issue cannot be dealt in any other way than the EU law. Setting numbers as to how many will be entitled to stay is ridiculous. I believe each case has to be examined separately.

The major problem for us the GCs regarding the settlers are a)the GC properties they were donated b)The extend to which their numbers changed the demographics (not only against the TCs but against the GCs too). Notice that the voters at Anan Plan showed TCs+Setlers were 30% of the total voters :!: :!:
