GPS in Cyprus?

Postby Jay75 » Thu Apr 12, 2007 1:29 am

Does anyone know anything about any GPS system in Cyprus? Is it available or? I've heard about it for years but like everything we heard here, it's "somewhere" "sometime".....
Anyone?

Your question "is gps available in Cyprus" -- yes of course it is -- much the same as it is available in every corner of the world .

I use my gps quite often when in Cyprus.

If you mean is sat nav available well its been posted regularly many times before .

But here goes again

There was a Eastern European guy that was involved in mapping out Cyprus for sat nav a couple of years ago -- he was deported -- the reason given was that he was illegal in Cyprus and "they had been looking for him for years" which I find surprising as he had run a business for some years and had been paying his social insurance and tax -- hardly a difficult person to find.

Since then there has been no more info on sat nav for Cyprus.

To be quite honest as Cyprus is such a small island I can't really see a need for it as a good map would serve you better.

With the amount of construction work going on in Cyprus it would be impossible to keep track of all the new area's -- even the local postman often hasn't got a clue until you show him where you live so I think that sat nav as we know it in the UK --door to door using post codes will not happen for a very long time in Cyprus.

Yes there is. But now only one company is making the maps, TerraMap, and the maps are only available as a bundle with a GPS/PDA device you can buy from Telefone. From what I know the maps are not sold separately.

Thanks for that Sotos.

I must admit I haven't looked for a few months so this has happened recently.

How detailed are the maps ?

I still think that door to door sat nav as we know it in the UK and Europe is not going to be available in cyprus for a long while .

I use my hand held GPS to find my way back when out and about in some of the more desolate area's of the Cyprus countryside and of course to find my way there again should I wish to return to the same place.

I still think that if you know where the major towns are you can't really get lost in Cyprus .

I don't own one. Just seen the maps for a while. The maps are detailed but when you enter a street number it is not 100% precise. What I hear is that other companies are creating maps now also.

Thanks Bill, and Soto.

I'll check out Telefone and find out more about it, I've also written to the company in Germany where I bought my GPS/Sat-nav hardware from, hopefully I'll get some good news from them.

Cheers!

You are probably spot on there

As the island is so small a pair of high power bino's would probably be good enough

http://www.terranav.com.cy/

Their website is still not finished, but they are available. I have seen them on sale for £379, but if you pay that for a Mio168 worth about £100, then you are soft in the head.
