Car Importation Nightmare

Postby andreaz » Thu Apr 12, 2007 1:07 am

I have been combing the internet attempting to discover what exactly the true picture is concerning the importation or a car for an family that is moving to cyprus intending to bring their usual vehicle/vehicles with them. The vehicles are over 6 months old and no exemptions are sought as it causes problema apparently when you come to sell. Taxes applicable as far as I am aware are:

1. Customs & Excise (depend on the age of car and size of engine) For an average 1600 aged 4 years vehicle according to customs excel formulae amounts to about £180.00. However does this calculation include vat or is that extra????

2. Registration Costs. between 0.1 to 0.6 depending on the size of the engine. IS THIS CORRECT.

Are there any additional taxes that I have missed out. Everyones help would be appreciated as getting a straight answer from goverment officials has proved taxing. Excuse the pun.

And getting a straight answer on this forum will be just as difficult.

It seems that everybody has had differing experiences in bringing a car into Cyprus.
I'm firmly convinced that the customs and the registration offices make up the rules as they go .

I have not been able to find two people with a similar car have the same experience when dealing with government officials on this matter.

I've ended up buying a car in Cyprus -- quick - easy - and no messing about having the car transported here and then dealing with the various government departments involved.

Best of luck

Lease a car, even better.

Lease through your own company and subtract the costs.

I'm happy to buy or lease one car but my second car has been a work of love over a period of 20 years. As its modified and not classed as a classic I fear I will be screwed on regitration but regretably from the calibre of feelings on the forum it appears that I may have to grin and bear it.

Andreaz

If it is in the UK, and you have owned it over 6 months, you shouldnt be paying anything to bring it in except a registration fee and road tax if you are coming to live here.

It is a nightmare bringing a car into Cyprus , my daughter did when she moved out there and the system is so badly administered that it makes ones blood boil.I actually flew to Cyprus and confronted those bigots at customs in order to get some bloody sense out of them. On one form that you are given it states " And any other documents that the customs officer requires you to produce."" Wide open for abuse. Since my daughter is half Cypriot half English , she was asked for my birth certificate , copies of both parents passports , wedding certificate , place of birth and dates of grandparents , and wait for it , LAST 3 MONTHS OF MY BANK STATEMENTS. That is when I saw red and flew out to Cyprus. I ought to add that this happen before accession to Europe , and my daughter was claiming duty free status that she was entitled to claim.

Hi G.Man

I have only recently joined this site. However, I read a thread that you contributed to on here as regrads importing a car from the UK. I have spent 4 months trying to research whether or not I will have to pay excise duty on importing my car from the UK to Cyprus. I can not find a definitive answer and it is trully stressing me out as we are due top move out within a month and I need to let the shippers know whether or not I want to take the car!

Can you confrim - does the 6 month rule apply only to those who are retiring to Cyprus? I will not be retiring.

I have a Honda Civic Type R. I have owned it for 9 months here in the UK. I bought it second hand. Its 1997cc and has CO2 emmissions of 215. I will be residing permanently in Cyprus and have a 1 year tenancy agreement to this effect.

Do you know where I can find wriiten confirmation that I wont have to pay the excise duty (which would be about CY£4000 GBP£4800!!!)? As the CYP MOF website seems to indicate that I will still have to pay the excise duty?

Soooooooo confusing!!! I cant sell the car in th UK as I would lose too much money.

I appreciate any comments.

Regards, Simon

Simon,

There is an overwhelming amount of advice on this and other forums that it is better to leave your car at home.

You might bring it in with no problems but you are more likely to end up with an administrative nightmare and possibly end up paying thousands in duty or having your car impounded.

I met a guy in Pissouri a while ago – I told him not to bring his car over but he assured me that now we are in the EU they can’t stop you, his accountant would sort them out, his solicitor would complain, etc. Last I heard his car had been impounded pending payment of duty.

Har Har, I wish you were correct.

I have a car in the UK that satisfies all the above criteria but the Cyprus authorities would require me to pay £14,000 odd pounds to keep it here.
As a result I have two vehicles bought at considerable cost in Cyprus, neither of which I would be seen dead in were I in the UK.
So much for freedom of movement within the EU.
