Moving to Cyprus 24th of April

Postby aussiedrillerman » Mon Apr 09, 2007 2:17 pm

Hello to everyone my name is Dereck and as you can tell from my nic I am an Australian and will be moving to Cyprus on the 24th of this month.

I work in the mining industry and have travelled extensively around the world with my work (all through Asia, Africa, Nth America and Sth America. However this will be my first experience of Europe and I am looking foward to it immensly.

I have been viewing your forum for a few weeks now and find the conversations both interesting and confronting with regards to the obvious differences there are on Cyprus. I have not formed any opinion on what, who, when or where was right, wrong or indifferent in this regard as every story has two sides. My experiences around the world has shown me that the truth is usually somewhere in the middle when it comes to such emotional subjects.

The only sure thing is that it is the ordinary people who suffer rather then the ones who make the decisions, especially when it comes to military action.

I shall in time research this on my own and form my own opinion as I think it is important to make choices in your life.

I will be living (based) in Nicosia and working on projects in Cyprus and in several other countries in Eastern Europe.

As mentioned I have enjoyed reading your forum as it is witty, ridiculous and serious, all things that I relate to.

I hope to meet many of you in the future and hope that we can share a laugh, arguement, beer, wine, meal, dance and some of our time together.

Looking forward to it

Dereck

Welcome to the forum and best wishes for your move to Cyprus. You will find that the more extremist views do not represent most people in Cyprus who are warm, approachable and friendly.

It is fascinating to see the posts though and there are some fantastic characters on this forum.

Thank you all for the welcome.

I didn't realise that you had possums on Cyprus though I wonder why one should avoid chewing on the asses of dead ones as a bit of possum stew never hurt anyone here - maybe theres some sort of weird possum flu in the ones over there - but i shall heed your advice and avoid chowing down on road kill.

As for big mining projects I am with a company who is doing exploration work. It is a Cypriot company and we are hoping to use modern mining and exploration techniques to find new reserves in that part of the world.

Copper and gold are our main targets and Cyprus has a long history with regards to these minerals. The following extract is from WWW.copper.org

The Name "Copper'"

In their picture writing the Egyptians used the Ankh sign for copper. Appropriately it was also the symbol of Eternal Life; and as that still happens to be one of the main features of copper, it is used everywhere today for the metal. A long time afterwards Homer, following the Greek practice of around 1000 B.C., called the metal Chalkos; hence the Copper Age is also known as the Chalcolithic. Finally, after another thousand years had elapsed, the words "aes Cyprium" appear in Roman writings of the Early Christian Era because so much of the metal came from Cyprus. 'Copper' is the anglicized version of this Latin phrase.

So thus to English speaking people the word copper comes from Cyprus and why the company I am working for is going to have a look around for some more of it.
