free-cyprus, I understand your frustrations around this topic, believe me I do not think there is anyone on this forum that does not share your frustration. However the situation at this moment in Cyprus is that Cypriots living in the North feel aligned to Turkey and identify as Turkish. To this end they have evry right to do so and you have no right to tell them otherwise.
Up until may a decade ago the Cypriots in the South felt strong allegiance to Greece and identified as Greek based on the fact that they speak the same language and many centuries ago the Island was settled by Helenic Greeks. However, after the Ottoman empire, with a large population of Turks remaining on the Island the cultures began to adopt each other's customs, traditions and belief systems to a point that they felt they could.
In the 60's & early 70's some ill infored and fanatical Cypriots who wanted the Island to be annexed to Greece began creating trouble within the Cypriot Community, forcing one population who also spoke Turkish to feel less valued and wanted on the Island. At the same time placing the lives of those Cypriots who spoke Greek in jeopardy through Enosis. This action was indeed so bad that it did not last. However, this gave Turkey an opportunty to invade Cyprus under false pretence and is now Occupying nearly half the Island. As such they have been found guilty of violation of human rights by the European Court of Human Rights and indeed the International Community. Aside from this the Island is now split into two distinct Communities, The Greek Speaking Community which also represents Cypriots of other ethnic bacgrounds and the Cypriot Community in the north representing the Turkish speaking community.
In an ideal world and one that I subscribe too also, there would only be one Cypru s one Cypriot people, it will give me great pleasure to arrive to this new Cyprus and I will embrace it with open arms. However, in the meantime we have a situation where the Island is divided and the Cypriot people have not come to a mutual understanding of what it is they want to see happenning with their country.
It would be more helpful on the other hand if your could in your posts, provide ideas, on perhaps how we could join as one and Unify our country keeeping in mind that there is a portion of our Cypriot population who would like to go on their own way, taking with them land, property and part of te Island that ought to be shared. This makes things complicated because of human rights. However, I am sure that this forum is cruised by government officials from both sides who may take some of our suggestions into account when formualating policies and plans for solution. Now you can be part in assisting with this by making suggestions and recomendations or you could continue to act they way you are calling people names, which only goes further in dividing and separating our Cypriot people. Hence alianating yourself and causing others a great dislike for you. If indeed you are a Cypriot who has the good fortune to have a heritage containing both the greek/ turkish language and therefore enriched by the customs/ values and beliefs of the diversity of our Islands history and culture, then my friend you are more blessed than I and indeed in a position to make changes as you know the pain and sorrow felt by all Cypriots. Use that, through a kind, respectful manner to achieve the results that you want for yourself and all Cypriots.
