ANKARA – Turkish Daily News
Turkey yesterday signed an economic program and agreement protocol with northern Cyprus, an annual financial assistance delivered by the Turkish government to help improve the welfare of Turkish Cypriots suffering from international sanctions for decades.
Deputy Prime Minister Abdüllatif Şener, who signed the protocol for Turkey's part, praised co-operation between Turkey and Northern Cyprus during a ceremony on the northern part of the island, saying that the Turkish Cypriots witnessed economic growth thanks to their co-operation with Turkey, despite the unfair sanctions.
The Turkish government puts aside $400 million annually from its budget quietly without any debate to help raise the living standards of the Turkish Cypriots, Şener said. He assured that Turkey would fight at every platform to put an end to the world's unfair stance toward northern Cyprus.
Despite the worldwide sanctions, Şener said, the Turkish Cypriot economy is promising and added that national income per capita in the north increased by 68 percent from 2002 to 2006, to $11,800 from $4,400.
In the meantime, Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday arrived in Ankara to lecture at the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ). He was expected to have a dinner with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Talat will return to northern Cyprus today.
