I think this is an excellent idea – these questions are asked over and over again…

Ouch.

Guys, anything wrong or inferior with a 'good quality, not Chinese' multi-petal dish of the correct size?

3.4m dishes I'm afraid do not fit in ones luggage!

But how can that be? When my Sky was installed the engineer connected it to the phone line and 5 minutes after he left I disconnected it and it has never been connected since. The same thing at my parents place and the same thing at the office. I still insist that it does not 'have to' be connected. I think I connected it once to buy a movie and once more when the box failed and Sky had to do an 'live check'.

You have been lucky, many are not. Sky regularly turn peoples systems off for this (normally with a written warning first). In addition to this you do not get a choice of Digibox if you go for a contract. So Sky plus...3 made at present - Amstrad Thomson & Pace.....only the pace is any good out here and they are the most expensive and therefore the most unlikely to be fitted. Normal sky.... 3 made at present Amstrad Thomson & pace ....only the Amstrad & Pace any good though I here the Pace DS440n is 'buggy' ....what do you do if you get one of the one with poor tuners??????

If its a fortec star like this http://images.ciao.com/iuk/images/produ ... 653576.jpg
then turn it pointing straight up and use it as a bird bath - it will leak water everywhere but still be more effective than if it were used as a satellite dish!

Nick,

Funny, but it does not answer the question.

OK, so use some exterior silicon sealer.

I don't understand the lack of signal reception V's the design of the dish.

I have seen multi-petal designs in ali, perforated steel (may of been ali) and fibreglass.

I thought it was size that mattered!

How does the sensitivity of a Dreambox tuner compare with the various ‘Sky’ tuners?

Silicone sealer, yes I like it  I will advise my bird loving Fortec Star owners of the new water saving measures.

Yes size does matter, however the quality of the dish matters too. I have installed quality 1.9m dishes that bring in C4 24/7 yet there are much larger dishes having problems.

Some dishes work particularly well and others don't....I generally find that I get what I pay for. DH/Anderson/Channel Master/Famaval/Supral if you buy any of these makes in the big dish sizes then you won't go too far wrong.

I assume we are talking about the Fortec Star, yes? It has very poor manufacturing tolerances and I am told are a bitch to put together! Being petalized will not help, although this is not always the case - The Famaval is a 2.4 with 8 petals to bring it out to 3.05m and it work very well. Iceman swears by the Jonsa which is also multipetal. What you have to realise is that the bigger the dish then the narrower the beam width ie the tune has to be much more accurate. So if the dish is not perfect then you will always have problems. I hope that helps at least a little.

Cheers

Anywhere from Bloody awful (early DM500) to not too bad (later 'Alps' DM500). I am no expert as I own the Alps DM500 and have little experience of anything else, but I hear it's about the best of the bunch. I am not aware of anyone on Island with the new DM8000 HD box yet. Word was the dreammultimedia wanted it to be the best!!

Cheers
