MOVING TO CYPRUS-OPEN A RESTAURANT

Postby cerasella » Thu Mar 29, 2007 10:05 pm

Hi!

I intend to relocate with my family to Cyprus to open a restaurant or a cafe, maybe with romanian courses. Can anyone help me to find information about which officially steps I should make in order to achieve this? I would be very grateful for any information , because I really don't know how to start searching....

Not really the easiest of business's to break into in Cyprus

A very good Cypriot friend of mine sold his business and house in London 10 years ago and had a restaurant built in Cyprus -- within 5 years they had run out of money -- the restaurant was run down by then as it never really took off in the first place.

We are talking of a Cypriot with family connections in Cyprus -- not a foreigner coming into the country -- he had plenty of money when he came to Cyprus and now it's down the pan.

I'm not trying to put you off or being negative in saying the same may happen to you -- but I would think very carefully before you make the move -- Cypriots are very wary of Eastern Europeans and also not very adventurous with their food.

One thing I can say is that he now works in a hotel and his wife works behind the bar at a local pub --- both of them really regret the move to Cyprus and wish they hadn't bothered.

I wish you the best of luck.

You know how to put throw a spanner in the works Bill!!!

You are more than correct with your post though I do have to say. It sounds very nice, a Romanian restuarant, but how many Romanians are there in Cyprus? I do know one thing though, there are 1000's of restaurants though!

May I suggest that you first of all find yourself a good supplier / manufacturer of first class catering equipment , www.devonscatering.co.uk is one such company , you may also like to receive our no nonsense feasibility report on your intended market.
Email me for details .
ps Credit facilities provided to those accompanied by genuine bankers drafts made out to www.devonscatering.co.uk

Hi Simon

I just thought I'd point out the difficulties.

It's not easy to break into business in Cyprus as a foreigner even more so as a Eastern European as the Cypriots are very wary of them.

You really must have something unique to succeed in Cyprus and quite often the right connections too.

Sorry if this sound a bit off putting, but in my experience as soon as you open something in cyprus, you'll find a copy-cat (legal) right next to you. Then down go the takings. Just look at the business in Cyprus, one after the other of the same. Master chef bakeries, pirillos bakers and now another empty store says 'bakery opening soon''. Perhaps if you are a big company you could withstand a loss ..... Think again... too many eating places already in Cyprus and well established. Sorry

Hello mate..
I have lived here 7 years, my advice would be,, dont do it..
I dont want to sound doom and gloom.. but you will waste your money.
other food outlets will do there best to put you out of business ..

Absolutely agree with jumbo. A little kebab take-away has more chances of survival.

Sorry to say that the previous postees are giving you good advice.my husband and i started a small bussiness in cyprus that although got off the ground certainly did'nt keep us so we had to give up before we went broke! You have to find something that cypriots do'nt want to do so competition is'nt there, but if that is the case the incomers will have already thought of it and will cut your throat to get the custom!
