There can be little doubt that nationalism has been the dominant political ideology in the modern history of Cyprus. With the advent of British colonialism in 1878, Greek-Cypriot nationalism, in the form of the demand for union (“Enosis”) with Greece, began to be transformed into a mass movement, in reaction to Turkish-Cypriot nationalism, which was calling for the partition (“Taksim”) of Cyprus along ethnic lines.

This essay by Greek Cypriot sociologist Caesar V. Mavratsas engages many of the issues at the center of national identity. Mavratsas, a professor at the University of Cyprus, published an important book on Greek nationalism in the late 1990s.
