FOOD FOR THOUGHT! AN ARMENIAN PRESIDENT FOR CYPRUS?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

FOOD FOR THOUGHT! AN ARMENIAN PRESIDENT FOR CYPRUS?

Postby fanourıo » Tue Mar 27, 2007 1:32 am

Case scenario: If Tassos Papadopoullos does not run for president, can you imagine the New president of the Democratic party Mr MArios Karoyian, an armenian, getting support from AKEL and EDEK, just like Tassos did as president of DEKO, to face Yiannakis Kassoulides at the next presidential elections in Cyprus? He will probably win the same way Tassos won with the support of three political parties. Nothing wrong with that, but can you imagine Turkey dealing with an ARMENIAN president of the ROC???

What a choice the Democratic Party in the South had! Maybe AKEL will elect a Turkish Cypriot General Secretary at their next assembly....that could be contra progressive!

Seriously I wonder if an Armenian can bocome president according to constitution. Or a maronite or a latin. I think they can't.

Hey Fano heres something you should investigate. A good journalist should know the answer.

In a democracy , all citizens are allowed to rise to the highest political forum , why not an Armenian or a Turkish Cypriot or a Greek Cypriot or any other Cypriots as president , provided his name is not BiN f..ng Ladin !!!

Yes why not Miltiades, but you know our glorious constitution that they forced on us says a TC cannot be president

That's why I wonder if an Armenian could be.

You know Marios Karoyan was not even allowed to serve in the army... just because he was Armenian.

According to the 1960 agreements the Armenians, Maronites and Latin communities were given the option to choose in which of the two major communities they want to include themselves with respect to their political rights (i.e. vote for president or Vice-president, elect GC or TC MPs etc)
All three communities choose to belong top the GC community, so they have the same political rights as the GC community and therefore can run for president but not for Vice-president and can be ellected in the GC parliamentary chamber but not in the TC one.
This the main reason that when people quote the % split of the population in terms of political rights they quote 82% Vs 18% and not 78% Vs 2% Vs 1% Vs 1% Vs 18%.
