Help with computer needed!

Postby 621andy » Mon Mar 26, 2007 6:47 pm

I've just bought a wireless router to attach to this museum piece of a computer so that I can run my lap top on wireless through it.

I was assured it was straightforward(!!) ha bluddy ha...

I followed the instructions with the router but canot get either comuter to connect to the 'net although it states on the 'network connections' that I am in fact connected. It works fine through the 'normal' connection box, but as when I substitute the router for the old box, I no longer have a connection...

HELP!!! :eyecrazy:

HELP!!! :eyecrazy:

From a distance this problem is like a needle in the haystack so let’s start with some basic checks…

Are the wireless network cards compatible with the router?

Is the wireless network name different to the hub/cable network name?

Do both router and wireless cards see each other and is there stability?

If these cards/router need line of sight are they getting it?

Regards, GR.

I don't understand the terminology you're using, but anyway I'll try and answer the questions.

When the router is plugged in, my laptop tells me it has a connection, and shows that it has a good signal. The main computer shows that it is also has a connection. But when I try and access the net, it will not connect.

Is the wireless network name different to the hub/cable network name?

Eh??! Pls excuse my ignorance!

I assume so, as my lap top shows that it has a good signal.

I assume I need to alter some setting somewhere. The bloke I bought it from said I had to 'log off'(or somesuch terminology) the old connection box first, before I could connect the router, but after trying to follow his road directions in pidgin english, I don't have much confidence in his instructions!

I guess this may be in the 'all too difficult box' to try and do this via a forum! :?

Is there anyone in the Pafos area who can help me please?! :(

Thanks

You definitely need onsite assistance or just take your laptop and the router to the fellow you bought it from and don't worry if his English is not good because he's bound to know more about computers than you do.

Good luck.

i had same problem. take out ethernet cable (blue) from router and modem. turn off all plugs. wait a second. turn on power and when you plug in the cable on the router and modem, check to see if the lights flicker e.g. sync etc., and then they should steady out. go back to computer turn on. start up and check yourwireless connection is ok. this worked for me.

Your IP has to be released. Connect everything in the way that it works with your previews setup without the wireless router. Go to start > RUN > in the box type cmd > in the window it will open type ipconfig /release. Then without doing anything else turn everything off and plug-in the router. The next time you connect you should get a new IP but you might have to go to i-choice first to login again. If you can't get to the i-choice page then turn everything off and call Cyta at 132 and tell them to release your IP.

I've basically followed Sotos advice but despite holding my breath and praying to Bill bluddy gates I'm still not getting anywhere. I tried accessing i-choice but that didn't work either so I'll try Cyta tomorrow, although I'm not really sure what I'm asking for... :? :(

God I hate computers

It says Canyon CN-WF514 on the box, and '802.11g wireless router' on the router.

Thanks by the way to everyone for your help!

your computer is connected to the home network by the sounds of it. simple test is as follows:

got to computer, click start/run type CMD
in the dos prompt type
ipconfig /all
now go to the laptop
click start/run CMD
type the following
ping x.x.x.x (x being the IP address given from the computer

if this is succesful the network you have created is succesful.

to get i-choice to work can be a bit more tricky, i assume you have one of the older router/modems from Cyta or you wouldn't have bought a wireless one. What you want to try is connecting the Cyta box up as normal, but instead of connecting into the back of your pc, connect it to the back of the wireless router (now that we have established it is networking the computers)

this should now work fine.
