ok I don't know this brand. Are you sure you connected the wires OK? Did you connect the cat5 that comes from the ADSL modem to the WAN port of the router? Do you have some web based control panel of the router that you can access? Try http://192.168.1.1/ or http://192.168.1.100/ or better read the manual about this. If the computer tells you that you are connected it means you are connected to the router. So the problem is that your router can not get an IP. If you connected the wires ok then either is some setting in the router or the IP needs to be released.

I'm getting lost again..sorry! I think I've tried everything you've suggested, but I'm not really sure.

When I tried the 'run..etc bit on my lap top, it wouldn't work.

It's so frustrating that it's probably something that could be fixed in seconds or minutes by someone who knows what they're doing, but trying to do it this way is frying my brain, as I'm not sure I'm doing everything correctly.

I'm happy to pay someone a reasonable price to get this sorted but don't know where to start.

My laptop is all in German which doesn't make it any easier, but I do speak the language so it shouldn't be a problem. I have similar problems wherever I go(I'm regularly moving home due to my job) until someone who knows about these things comes along and says 'oh it's easy, just do this...' fingers fly over the keyboard and everything magically works...

Anyway, many many thanks for your patience!

Andy you're a sucker for punishment. If you couldn't answer the basic questions I asked how can you possibly follow technical networking instructions towards a solution?

I did Help Desk in the past and I know when a user can or cannot help themsleves through instructions so forget it and go to a computer store but first you should copy all your documents to a memory stick and ask that a FRESH ENGLISH WINDOWS be installed! (Take all your drivers too)

Windows has full support for some 300 languages so there's no excuse to have non-English Windows so stop making your life even more difficult.

Good luck.

I'm a balloon pilot not a computer expert! If my washing machine/tv/ whatever breaks down I call an expert..I don't try and fix something I know nothing about. However I don't know an expert in this field in my area hence the post... :?

Your instructions very likely mean something to someone who understands computers, but to me you might as well be speaking russian.. Deutsch kann ich doch sprechen! also es ist scheiss egal ob mein laptop Deutsch spricht oder nicht.. It's computer I don't speak!

Well then you should make time and travel to have your laptop fixed if it's important otherwise throw it over the balloon and you'll gain a little more altitude. :)

The problem is not the lap top! The problem is connecting the wirless router to the huge box on my desk! Once it works on that, then I can probably set up the lap top.

You are able to connect happily using your laptop directly into the Cyta Modem ?

You connect the router in-line and can't get on the net or to iChoice but can get to the config of the router ?

If so its the ip address needs releasing as it is "stuck" to the mac address of the laptop.

Select "cable modem" from the wizard and spoof the mac address of the laptop when it asks.

try it ... can't be any worse off

Am I being very stupid? Should I connecting my router through the blue ADSL box thing, instead of trying to bypass it?

Basically, I've got a big museum piece of a computer that is used for the business. It's set up on Cytanet/i-choice or whatever its all called, and has been set up here for some time. I arrived to be told that the previous pilot ran his laptop via a wireless router, through this connection. We need to keep the main computer connected, but I want to run my laptop(which is not a mac) through the same connection as well.
However it won't work. I've tried connecting the cable from the big computer instead to my lap top but this doesn't work.
It's obviously something simple as it shows there is a conection, but won't let me access the net.

I get lost when people start using terminology that means nothing to me!

andy did u try what I told you re the blue ethernet cables and turn off and then on. have you been in your computer in control panel and find your wireless connection. sometimes you need to tell it to start.

Dont worry any I'm having all sorts of problems. but when something goes wrong you remember it for the next time and guess what .... you become a computer wizard in the end. Unlike me, lost everything...cos I was stupid not to notice the proper restore function.......

I really don't know if I've done everything right or not :(

I think I'll put a notice on the board of Papantonios to see if anyone can help locally....

Many thanks everyone! In the meantime I'll carry on with this old thing- at least it works.

Silvia- Just read about your disaster! Puts my frustrations with this sodding box into perspective! I can imagine how you feel. My condolences :(
But also highlights exactly why I don't want to 'experiment' too much with settings etc. With my luck I'll end up with no internet connection at all.
