I'm sure it's been published here before but:
“….On 15th July 1974, General Yoannidis, together with General Yorgitsis, the Commander of the Greek Regiment in Cyprus, and General Yanakomidis organized a coup d’etat against Makarios with other 102 Greek officers. The President’s Palace in Nicosia was kept under fire by heavy weapons but president Makarios survived this attack through a miracle. After Greek officers violated the Cyprus Constitution, Nikos Samson was appointed as the new president of the Cyprus Republic. Turkey intervened in Cyprus using its legal right, on 20th July 1974.”
