Talat calls off crucial meeting
Talat calls off crucial meeting
New blow for talks

EFFORTS TO get “technical” talks started on the basis of the July 8 agreement received a further setback yesterday when the Turkish Cypriot side called off a meeting between Tassos Tzionis and Rashit Pertev, the representatives of the two community leaders.
Mehmet Ali Talat said the Turkish Cypriot side needed time to “re-evaluate” the UN-brokered process, and hold consultations with Ankara.
He met Michael Moller, UNFICYP’s chief of mission, and explained to him the Turkish Cypriot side’s need to “evaluate the latest developments on the issue,” and for this reason the Tzionis-Pertev meeting had to be postponed.
Yesterday’s meeting was dubbed crucial, as it would determine whether there has been a breakthrough in the efforts to set up committees and working groups as envisaged in the July 8 Gambari agreement.
While the UN showed no cause for alarm, and pressed ahead with their effort to make progress, the US and Britain were also involved in backstage diplomatic moves.
Greek Cypriot political parties slammed the Turkish move as a clear sign they did not want a settlement. They said the Turks were clearly dragging their feet, trying to wreck the Gambari deal.
The Greek Cypriot politicians said the Turks aimed instead at “upgrading” their breakaway state, while hoping this helped Turkey’s EU accession talks.
This was reported by the Cyprus Weekly. He is probably waiting for fresh instructions from Ankara. Talat, a beacon for unification? Yeah right.....

Lets hope that Talat will see the light and for once put Cyprus ahead of Turkey...hmmm then probably he will find himself out of office...

The sudden swing in tasos's attitude is alarming he should liaise with Turkey as it appears the EU is gearing up for serious discussion on keeping their promise of Direct Trade forTCs.

After Pertev's visit to Ankara last week and the call on him to hold back on the discussions of the committees it is clear they are now preparing their death ceremony. This is how I translate Talat's statement "we will re-evaluate our participation at the committees"

What saddens me the most is that everything was agreed with Pertev. Even the UN had prepared a statement and the celebrations for the starting up of talks. Then he goes to Ankara and on coming back "poof"-another hope blown away.

Wrong...the German presidency of the Eu today made it clear to the EU Commision that nothing can happen without the concent of the RoC. Direct trade can only happen if the Commision manage to bypass the RoC through approving direct trade based on article 133 which is designed for dealing with third countries. However, this contadicts Protocol 10 of the accession agreement and so such a move cannot stand in front of the European Court.
This development just happened yesterday night and this is the only major development Vp.

Fyi Germany announced today they will do nothing for which the Roc will not agree. So forget about direct trade.

Direct trade will not save you either. It only aims to politically upgrade the pseudo to a semi recognised state.

It has been all over the RoC media today. Unfortunately you will have to wait until tomorrow when the Cyprus Mail will be publishing this in English. Not surprised you have not heard anything in the "trnc". Buy a copy of Africa tomorow...they seem to be the only ones that are willing to publish all the news even if these are "bad news"...

Well if this does not make it official that the "trnc" and especially the leadership of it, is just a fascarde for the international committee I don't know what is. Talat is selling his people to the Turks and no one is doing anything about it. I wonder if the wider Turkish Speaking Cypriot Community is wanting this.,
