Children in Car seats.

Postby joderv1 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 10:48 am

Hi All,

I live in the TRNC. I was brought up in the UK.

I have an issue with people leaving their children jumping around on back seats with no seat belts and babies sitting on their mothers laps in the front seat with no seatbelt.

Does this happen in the ROC? Are there regulations there about it like the UK?

I am just interested to know as these kind of things, especially children and safety, I feel is really important.

I believe, Esso are giving away car seats to new borns. I read something in the paper. And yes, there is a law in Cyprus.

There is a law but like most of the others concerning motoring it does not seem to be enforced.

Yes it really gets to me when mothers let their kids do that. My son is 18mnths and while id never let him get in a car without being strapped in, i regularly see other kids in cars his age not strapped in. Thing is, i think its ignorance on their parents part, as anyone who has seen one of those crash videos knows what can happen to a child not in a car seat. It doent have to be a very serious accident for something to happen to a child not in a seat just the car breaking suddenly. Im in the ROC by the way and yes there are laws about this, but unfortunately the police dont stop anyone, as far as i know. They are more interested in setting up cameras to catch ppl speeding and giving fines for mobile phone use.

No names mentioned but a woman we know lets her kids stand on the seats, front and back. One of the kids opened the door while the car was moving and tumbled along the road. No serious damage. Funny thing is, she still does it. ..................Arrrgggghhhhh

The ignorance of these people drives me mad. I have two children and I would never dream of leaving them without a car seat or seat belt.

Some people here buy the travel systems i.e. pushchairs with car seat and they put the babies bag, blanket etc in the car seat and hold baby.

I also witnessed a man driving, he had a seatbelt on and two year in front seat without a belt. He had to break hard and put his arm across him to stop him falling. Why not just put a seatbelt on the child for gods sake?

These kind of things should not frustrate me, but they do. In Malta it is the same so maybe a med thing.

There needs to be more education about this.

Wasn't there an accident last year in Larnaca where a girl was thrown through the windscreen??? Some things won't change. Police need to act and enforce stiffer fines. Ignorance is no excuse, but a kick in the financial nuts will knock some sense in to some people! The police are chicken sh*ts and worry about giving tickets etc to people in case they are politically connected. It will stifle their promotional prospects.

Well I live in the TRNC and according to my husband it is not against the law to NOT have your child in a seatbelt or car seat. That seems absolutely ridiculous. Do they have no respect for human life? Not just the police though, parents should use some common sense.

The driving here is also terrible. I cannot count the number of times people have just come out of no where and I have had to break hard or swerve.

It is one of my biggest peeves.
