Churches turned into restaurants in occupied areas?

Postby Sotos » Tue Mar 20, 2007 12:52 am

In the news today I heard something about 70+ churches that they are going to be turned into restaurants in the occupied. I was on the move when I heard this so I don't remember details. Anybody with more info?

I think it's most unlikely on grounds of practicality. Some of the churches are maintained, usually as museums. Others have just been left and are in poor condition after 32 years - same as mosques in the South. It would cost more to get them back into a fit condition than it would to build a new restaurant. And in most areas of the North there are no shortages of restaurants.

I have asked before if anyone can tell me where a church is that is being used for something else. Only one person gave me a reply (Ayios Nikitas) where he says one is being used as an office. I intend to check it out when I have time. I think that this story is like churches being used for stables - silly propaganda which a moments thought will tell you is not likely to be true.

The RoC Ministry of Foreign Affairs site is not what I would call trully unbiased. In the same way, most of the sites that you can google have a point to make and it would be just as easy to google so-called Christians doing things to mosques.

Leaving religion out of it for the moment, use your commonsense. Is it likely that seventy derelict buildings are going to be converted into restaurants? Just think of the inconvenience of turning a building like a church into a restaurant. Much easier to build a new restaurant next door.

I seem to remember that there was a similar nonsense story about turning Apostolos Andreas into a hotel a few months back.

Feelings run high, but don't take all the stories that you hear as true, especially if you can check the facts on the ground.

By the way the above links include photos of churches and monasteries. Some of the photos were taken before 1974.
