Even though they don't charge import duty, there is still excise duty to pay, and it can cost a lot depending on the engine size and age of the car!

So if you are in the north, then tough luck I guess...

Part of the joy of living in a puppet state

;)

Very lucky to be in North . Lower prices and better standarts

I always advise against bringing cars in.

I met a guy just over a year ago who insisted that he would bring his, that it would be illegal to charge duty as it was from the EU, his solicitor would sort it all out, etc.

I understand that his X5 is currently impounded awaiting payment of duty.

It may be against EU rules but what are you going to do when they take your car from you?

:) Thanks again for the interest in this post. We are not realy interested in the car (would be a bonus), but our bikes, which we've owned for a few years and invested quite a lot of money. We've heard that if you have owned and used the vehicles, and can prove it, for 6 months then you should be exempt from all import charges, I know I am known for my ability to dream a rosey dream :?

Nothing surprises me in Cyprus with respect to the EU.

Some departments of the Government have embraced the EU-- some stick to the letter of the EU law -- but other departments don't even acknowledge the EU exists let alone abide by it's laws / rulings.

I think it's down to money -- if they are going to lose money they don't want to know.
