Ata Atun wrote:lthough Cyprus has historically never been part of any Greek state, the population of Cyprus was changed dramatically by the British once Cyprus became a Crown Colony. The British began to allow Greeks to settle in Cyprus and communities were set up in Greece to encourage people to move to the island of Cyprus. Isthis true? Greek Cypriots only became a majority when Cyprus became a crown colony? If not, then how do these hacks get away with such twaddle and still keep their jobs?

Because it keeps the Turkish media regulators and the general public happy.

He is talking rubbish and the best way to confront this if it's a forum/talkback is... "Could you please provide a link or reference to back this?" ...and he'll then do a vanishing act! :)

Brits encouraging Greek immigration ? I don't think so!

Another important British possession in the east of the Mediterranean was the island of Cyprus. Poised strategically on the doorstep of the 1evant, Cyprus was pushed into the British sphere Of influence when in 1878 that island was effectively taken out of Turkish control. Benjamin Disraeli saw Cyprus as the third British outpost to maintain Britain's control over the Mediterranean. The other two strategic British possessions were Malta and Gibraltar.

Political domination of Cyprus was the first step. Colonising that island was the second. TO achieve this aim London tried to entice some Maltese to settle in sparsely populated areas Of Cyprus to offset the growing importance of Greek immigration into the island.

As far as Greek population movements are concerned, Ata Atun does not mention those thousands of GCs that fled Cyprus after all the hanging and head chopping of prominent GCs in 1822.

Also I think there was an Greek inflow to Cyprus as a consequence of the population exchange in 1923.

there is no reason to bother answering such claims, since he doesnt bother to give the necessary sources.
the whole articcle is in any case full of inacuracies.
i have surely read way more decently presented arguements from tcs. this is rediculous

They have no arguments and thats why they make up stories. Not the first time. I am not surprised.

I do remember reading somewhere that some TCs left the island during WW1 because Britain and Turkey were at war, but there was no mention of how many.
