An Austrian member of the European Parliament's High-Level Contact Group for relations with Turkish Cypriots yesterday decried the international isolation of Turkish Cypriots, calling it a shame for both Europe and the United Nations.
Austrian Liberal MEP Karin Resetarits, in an exclusive interview with TNA, added that peaceful, honest people like Turkish Cypriots, who have not done anything wrong for decades, are being treated like outlaws.
Asked how the contact group leader could be fair to the situation without holding talks with Turkish Cypriot leaders, Resetarits replied, "This you have to ask President (Francoise) Grossetete herself. I cannot give you an answer on her behalf."
Stating that she meets Turkish Republic of Northern Cypriots (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat and as many Turkish Cypriots as possible every time she has an opportunity, she added, "It is genuine to talk to each other, as it is then we develop ideas to find ways out of the various problems the Turkish Cypriots have to face."
On Grossetete's turning down an invitation by Talat for talks, she sounded a note of dissent, saying such action is impolite and rude. "I heard about it from a third party," she added. "The contact group has not met since. But it will be certainly a topic at the next meeting if there is to be one."
On the group's role, she said that it is not a cure-all, adding that they are continuing to push to raise awareness. "Cyprus is a small island -- the big European nations and their powerful representatives aren't thinking of Cyprus all day long," she added. "It's also us who remind them to do so at least once in a while. I say this as a member of another small European country. If the contact group was dissolved today at the conference of presidents, it would be to the detriment of Turkish Cypriots."
She also expressed her hope that Turkish Cypriot deputies will soon take their place in the EP as observers.
