Postby villawagen » Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:55 am

doh !!! i am trying to help my 9 year old do his homework and we have got to the last question. but as i am completely thick, when it comes to maths, i have had a mental breakdown. it just does not seem right to me :?

here is the question ??

of the 114 children in y6 3/4 have pets.
49 children have a dog.
23 children have a cat.
how many y6 children have other kinds of pets ???

i need the answer and how it was worked out please

not the sort of question for a dyslexic child but there you go

Work out 75% of 114 then minus 49 and 23.

Should come to 13.5 although I don't know have you can have half a child!

I second that.

Although, if fraction is .5 or more, then round it up to 14.

I think it is a trick question!

Not only is ¾ of 114 85½, you don’t know if any of the children have dogs and cats.

Therefore it is impossible to work out the correct answer with the information given. ;-)

This is a strange and stupid question to ask a 9 year old child . Maths should be simple . 85,5 children have pets? what is the meaning of 0,5 in that case? It makes the child to hate Maths starting from that age!

I think you got the problem wrong.

It should be like this:

There are 2 groups A and B. In group A 3/4 children have a pet either cat or dog. In group B the children have other kind of pet.

So basically you have to find the number of group B which is 18.

So the wording of the problem should have been

of the 114 children in y6 3/4 of a bunch/group have pets and the rest of the children have other kinds of pets

I am curious to hear from you what the exact wording was.

{I mean not the one you understood but what the book actually says}

For a 9 year old the more complex version wouldn't be the one expected. Keep it simple!

the wording was on a worksheet and not a book. i have written it down exactly as it was on the worksheet !!!!!

as i suspected from your replies the question must be inaccurate :? no wonder he was (and myself) confused

Yes you're right I often get really confused as the questions are so badly written. Poor kids, they get so demoralised.
