Is this how things really are in north Cyprus?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

joderv,

So I understand the major problem for you was the cost of living? (compared to your income i.e)

So the next question is:what kind of expats really make it when they return. I mean what kind of job they do to "make it"?

Unfortunately, this aspect of the CyProb is maybe one of the most depressing ones...the past is behind us and time maybe has started healing the wounds the Cypriot people got over the last 40 or so years. However, the open wound of the continuous annexation of the occupied cyprus to mainland turkey is one that time cannot heal - this is a wound that grows bigger and bigger and forces our TCs compatriots into self exile. Yet it is amazing to see a number of TCs in this forum boasting about how good life is in the occupied areas and trying to convince not Gcs but their TC brothers that turkey is their saviour. Well its not, Turkey is their patron an their patron will remain until people like vp realise that what is actually happening in the occupied areas the last 32 years is ethnic cleansing in its worst form. TCs population is being threatened with extinction and yet some people are playing dumb.

I have lived in the UK for almost 8 years before returning to Cyprus and have been around many TC compatriots. Most of these people went into self exile because they felt the occupation in their skin, they didn't want their children to be brought up in an area where one fifth of the population are soldiers, where the voicing of a different opinion is prohibited and where if you are not a friend of the regime there is no future for you.

I am really saddened when I hear stories like the ones in the Cyprus Mail and the one shared with us by Jo. I think this is the biggest tragedy of the Cypriot people after the 1963 and 1974 events.

Yet, the majority of TCs in this forum deny it. I don’t know what to believe anymore…

You know I just had a look at that Atca site the other day, there was one guy saying all TCs in the occupied should be forced to leave, so that annexation with Turkey occurs faster. So much nationalism-it’s unbeleivable.

Jerry thank you for the article, but is that a greek speaking cypriot's perspective??? It is unclear from this forum what turkish speaking cypriots really feel about the north/ south divide. The settlers issue keeps coming up all the time. Is it a problem for the turkish speaking cypriots? or is that what greek speaking cypriots would like to think?

I know it is easier said thatn done, however the fact that there is no influx of turkish speaking cypriots from the north to the south, then it would indicate to me that people are happy living te way they are.

I for one have no idea what is going on in the north, but has been my observation that peoples circumastances could be a lot better and there is a huge divide from turkish speaking cypriots on this forum as to the workings of the "trnc" and the benefits to its citizens.

I personally feel that if things are as bad as they are potrayed to be, the RoC has the responsibility to support those turkish cypriots who want a better life for themeslves and their families to leave the north and re-settle in the south so that they can enjoy a quality of life comparable to that of the rest of the cypriot population. furthemore the leadership in the north ought to begin a partnership of unification in all domains so that the peril of turkish speaking cypriots is somehow put to an end. And allow those people to have a descent life. It seems to me they have got the raw end of the dealk where they have been taken out of the frying pan and put into the fire. that is not justice, freedom or equality.

Humanist if you were a TC would you move to the souther part and live like a foreigner, or would you immigrate to say Canada and still live like a foreigner?

It is obvious the TCs chose the 2nd.

We left the UK and came to North Cyprus for a better life. My husband wanted to come back to his homeland and I wanted to have a different life. I wanted to be able to stay at home and look after my children and to have more family time.

We honestly thought that it would be cheaper to live in Cyprus than in the UK, but it is not.

After numerous problems with my husbands family we also had to deal with the problems of Northern Cyprus.

Admin here is chaos, there is no system and everything takes so long for even the simplest of things. One minute you are told one thing and the next you are told another. The cost of living has risen so much. Food is not as cheap as you might think, electricity charges are apparently one of the highest in the world.

I never had my expectations too high, but even my lowest expectations were shattered. Cyprus is just not for us and sadly we will be returning to the UK.

I hope others have a better experience.

Jo :)

Hi Jo,

Firstly welcome to the forum.

I take it and correct me if I am wrong you are English and your husband is TC, you do not speak any Turksh and your husbands Turkish is average. Did you buy or build or rent a house? did you work out if you could financilally survive here without finding a good paying job? did you expect to live off income from the UK? did your children adapt and were their ages appropriate for moving to another country? have you tried to get anything done in Government offices in the UK recently? or tried to have an English bank carry out the simplest of written instructions?

Your adventure may have not worked out as expected but many people who come here from the UK feel that living here will just be like being on 2 weeks holiday well you have found out the hard way that its not and that you have to work hard to earn money to live well like we all do, and like everyone does all over the world. Nothing is for free and although admin here is bad it just as bad in the south as well plus you dont know what the hell they are saying half the time.

Jo you just miscalculated this could have been the case if you moved to France or India or Kenya...all a matter of adapting and obviously you were unable to do this for I feel and I may be wrong mainly financial reasons.

I neither claim to know too much about the occupied areas humanist although I visited many times and i have TC friends. Well one of the persons I know is a dentist. (no I am not his client, I simply know him). He doesn't have much work.

I then compare him with my GC dentist who charges CYP 1 per minute and he has so much work who even sends clients away.

NB Actually GC dentists don't charge per minute but if you record the time they spend on you it comes 20 pounds per 20 minutes

What is it TC? You don't believe me? Go to Atca and see for yourself. I may even find the relevant thread for you if you insist.
