What species of spiders are there in cyprus?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

The lizards are harmless, even the big dinosaur-like ones! The larger centipedes can inflict a nasty punctured pinch (venomous) and I agree they look revolting. They are usually Scolopendra cingulata ssp. Again, the taxonomy of the subspecies is unknown and there could be as many as 10 on the island.

Whereas butterflies are well documented on the island, moths are a family that is not. An entomologist friend estimates there are over 1,000 moth species, of which hardly more than a handful are fully studied. The most beautiful one is the Oleander Hawk Moth, which would put any butterfly to shame.

For those interested in serious discussions about Cypriot nature, there is a specialised Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cypnature/ This covers all animal and vegetable species.

As for the cobra story, it seems to be a myth. The species in question is Naja haje or Egyptian Cobra but both the supplier and importer of the palm trees (from N. Africa) state that it could not happen. How the story started seems to be a mystery.

Jambo I think if you met me when there was a spider around you would find that I am definitely more frightened of them than they are of me

8) UM..No! If everyone took that advice then you would soon be plagued by all sorts of pests and diseases carried by them. they are there in the food chain for a purpose - Agreed pretty they aint! but as my mother used to say ' if you want your house fly free, then let the spider be' ..My parents used to own a couple of greengrocer shops in the days when Bananas were shipped in wooden boxes packed in straw.......now you should have seen what used to crawl or slither out of those!!! They encouraged my interest in the bugs, spiders etc.. what i was not allowed to keep usually ended up in the London Zoo. what i am dissapointed about is there dont appear to be any geckos/ lizards around the ares of the resale apartment i just bought....... :(

Centipedes make my skin crawl, when I used to live in Cyprus I saw one in our house and it took me a good 10 minutes to kill it, it just wouldn't die! I kept bashing it with my grans slipper and it was half squashed with its insides coming out but it was still running around like an athlete.

Moths freak me out man, they're like the rat version of butterflies, I hate the fact they're not scared of me . I just googled that moth and it looks pretty.

Kool I was going to say, I heard there are 2 kinds of poisinous snakes in Cyprus though is this true? And how venomous are they?

I also remember when I was younger we all went to some beach and we saw a whole bunch of people running away and they told us we shouldn't go there because scorpions were coming out of the sand all over the place. Could this of been true?
