The lizards are harmless, even the big dinosaur-like ones! The larger centipedes can inflict a nasty punctured pinch (venomous) and I agree they look revolting. They are usually Scolopendra cingulata ssp. Again, the taxonomy of the subspecies is unknown and there could be as many as 10 on the island.
Whereas butterflies are well documented on the island, moths are a family that is not. An entomologist friend estimates there are over 1,000 moth species, of which hardly more than a handful are fully studied. The most beautiful one is the Oleander Hawk Moth, which would put any butterfly to shame.
For those interested in serious discussions about Cypriot nature, there is a specialised Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cypnature/ This covers all animal and vegetable species.
As for the cobra story, it seems to be a myth. The species in question is Naja haje or Egyptian Cobra but both the supplier and importer of the palm trees (from N. Africa) state that it could not happen. How the story started seems to be a mystery.
