Turkish Cypriot found dead near Larnaca

Postby Alexandros Lordos » Sat Jan 15, 2005 10:02 am

I've just heard in the news that a middle-aged Turkish Cypriot, as well as two younger women who were with him, were found dead near their car on the highway, close to Larnaca.

Their deaths were from gunshot wounds ...

Has anyone else heard something about this?

Phıleleftheros onlıne says three people were found dead, period. It looks like murder, though, that's what it says.

Are they sure the man was a TC?

Yes, I've listened to CyBC news, and they made it clear that the murdered person was a Turkish cypriot permanently residing in Larnaca, and the two women were his relatives.

Apparently, they were all found dead in their pyjamas, which suggests that the murderer abducted them from their house, and then forced them to drive to the location where the murder happened.

All three were shot in the head at point-blank range. :(

OK, CyBC has published some more information, the murdered persons were a Turkish Cypriot ex-banker, his wife and his daughter.

Apparently, he was the owner of Everest Bank in Morphou which declared bankrupcy some time ago, leaving many creditors and investors chasing after him for compensation, after which point he moved to the Greek side for protection. His son also owns a Casino in Karavas.

With this info, it seems that we are not talking about an inter-communal killing ... most probably the motives were financial/revenge ...

It is still an extremely sad story though ... :(

An old report about the owner of the Bank Everest, Elmas Guzelyurtlu.

VOLKAN alleges that Turkish Cypriot living in the free areas "exports" terrorism to the occupied areas
Under the title "The identity of the person who exports terrorism to the `TRNC¨ from the South has started to be getting clear: Elmas Guzelyurtlu", local VOLKAN (09.07.04) reports on an incident which took place in the morning hours of the day before yesterday in occupied Nicosia.
The paper writes the following: "While the echo on the incident during which at 4a.m. the day before yesterday the car with plate numbers DL547 used by Kufi Birinci, but which belongs to Mehmet Birinci, was set on fire after being covered with igniting material, Kufi Birinci made important statements on the incident.

Mr Kufi Birinci, who is in the business of foreign exchange, said: "Because my car has no insurance, I changed my car with my brother´s with the aim of being able to pass to the south. Based on my relation with him I suspect Elmas Guzelyurtlu. There is great possibility that the incident was carried out by Elmas Guzelyurtlu".

The paper adds that in the past year tens of cars of businessmen were set on fire and according to their statements to the "police" they too suspect Elmas Guzelyurtlu.

(It is noted that the Elmas Guzelyurtlu lives and does business in the free areas of Cyprus).

By the way, besides the police authorities, a GC army General visited the crime scene, because there is a camp very close by. When asked, the General said none of the soldier guards heard anything last night...

Who said we need an army??????

Three Turkish Cypriots murdered, Minister says for 'settling of accounts'

Nicosia, Jan 15 (CNA) -- Three Turkish Cypriots were found murdered on the Nicosia – Larnaca motorway this morning with shot wounds on the head, a crime the Cypriot Justice and Public Order Minister described as “settling of accounts”.

A Police patrol reported that they noticed a vehicle parked on the side of the motorway, near Koshi village in Larnaca district. They found fifty-two year old Elmas Ali Guzelyurtlu in a ditch near the vehicle and his wife Zerrin, aged 50, and his 16-year-old daughter Ayce in the backseat.

The family’s 18-year-old son is reported to be living in the Turkish- occupied northern part of the island.

Ali, a banker and businessman in the occupied areas, his wife and daughter moved to the free areas in 2000, following the bank crisis in the occupied areas, Justice and Public Order Minister Doros Theodorou told CNA.

Since then, the Cypriot minister added, Ali seems to have been a target, adding that "all his enemies appear to have been from the occupied areas, or the regime or from economic circles in the north”.

He noted that it looks as if the murder was carried out for “settling of accounts or for vengeance” and that it was done by “criminal elements from the occupied areas”.

Theodoru said that recently, Turkish Cypriot newspaper “Volkan” reported that Ali "was involved in criminal acts with economic motives".

Cyprus Police Chief Tasos Panagiotou told reporters at the scene that the victims were living in the free areas for he last years.

He said the murder was carried out by gun, which is missing, and that cartridges were found in the area.

Coroner Panicos Stavrianos, who carried out an autopsy at the site, said it was a “criminal act”. The victims were found wearing pyjamas and jackets.

The bodies were taken to the Larnaca hospital mortuary, where a post mortem examination will be carried out probably tomorrow, while the car was tugged away.

Turkish Cypriot journalists rushed to the scene of the crime where they were informed by the Police leadership on the details.
