The designer of the original Cyprus Repuclic Flag, Mr Ismet Vehit Guney has passed away.
Mr Guney was a family friend and a teacher of mine in the Turkish Boys Lyce in Nicosia 1958-64. He was a great artist and poet. He also was a keen photographer.
He also fought with his Cypriot compatriots during the Second World War in Palestine and Ancona.
Rest in peace my teacher.

Since he designed my favourite flag in the world he's ok in my books. |

With much respect for a man who must have truly loved Cyprus to produce such a beautiful symbol.
I hope he was suitably honoured to be draped in our flag, and his legacy, as he was finally laid to rest .... |

I doubt it Oracle.
On the way home I had stopped at a friends home. He had TurkCyp TV on. There was a long program on. It was about his life an Obituary. He was proud to have fought with his Cypriot countrymen all over the Med. They showed him with his GC and TC brothers at arms. They honoured him alright. I have a feeling he would have loved to have been draped in his creation.
Thank you all.

In the obituary on TV there was an interview with him. He said that he never painted for money he simply painted for pleasure. No mention was made of the Flag of the Republic.
I think Halil is still too upset to have missed this news item. |

I'm sure that designing the flag was just a small part of his career Deniz
But I wonder how he felt having designed a flag for a new nation ,full of hope for the future, with what has gone on since ....sorry just thinking out loud
BTW I dont want to hijack the thread re the payment but I'm sure someone did post re this a while back |

I do remember the thread.
I am sure he was unhappy that the Republic did not last long.
Life sucks. We all live in hope. Not always achieving - life is so short. |
